Odd Socks Uses Blackmagic Design to Film New Zealand Music Scene
Blackmagic Design announced that Odd Socks Productions, a New Zealand based production company, has been using Blackmagic Design cameras, including the new full frame Blackmagic PYXIS 6K digital film camera, and DaVinci Resolve Studio editing, color grading, visual effects (VFX) and audio post production software to produce visually stunning live DJ performances in some of the country’s most breathtaking locations. Combining high end cinematography with the vibrant energy of live music, Odd Socks Productions is bringing a fresh perspective to music content creation.
Founded by cinematographer Daryl Habraken and producer Yvie Harvie-Salter, Odd Socks Productions, through its REDLINING brand and YouTube channel, specializes in creating and distributing high quality music and cultural content. Habraken, whose credits include work on “The Last Samurai” and the “Power Rangers” franchise, sought to elevate the representation of New Zealand’s electronic music scene by producing immersive, cinematic DJ performances filmed in spectacular outdoor settings.
Habraken explained: “We were inspired by international YouTube channels that showcase live DJ sets against incredible backdrops, and we realized there was nothing like that representing New Zealand. With our stunning landscapes and rich talent pool, it made perfect sense to start something similar here.”

Odd Socks’ most recent productions were filmed on Waiheke Island, incorporating a four camera setup featuring the Blackmagic Pocket Cinema Camera 6K digital film camera, the new PYXIS 6K, and an original Blackmagic Pocket Cinema Camera. With two stationary cameras, one roaming, and an aerial drone, the team captured dynamic angles and sweeping shots of all the performers and the surrounding environment.
To push the visuals even further, Odd Socks Productions utilized anamorphic lenses on select cameras, achieving a widescreen cinematic look that accentuated the beauty of the locations. “One of the standout features of the Blackmagic cameras was how easily they handled anamorphic shooting,” said Habraken. “The ability to dial in lens settings and see the correct desqueezed image in camera made all the difference when composing shots on location.”
The entire post production workflow was completed in DaVinci Resolve Studio, where the team took full advantage of its powerful grading and multi camera editing capabilities. “We shot everything in Blackmagic RAW, which allowed us to have complete control over exposure and color in post,” Habraken noted. “Even when filming in changing natural light, the flexibility of DaVinci Resolve meant we could balance everything seamlessly.”
Beyond filming, Odd Socks Productions has embraced Blackmagic cameras for their ease of use and color science. “I’ve been using Blackmagic cameras since the very first Cinema Camera,” Habraken shared. “The color science is incredible, the menu system is intuitive, and the integration with DaVinci Resolve makes it an unbeatable ecosystem for production.”
Looking ahead, Odd Socks Productions plans to continue expanding its music content, collaborating with international DJs and tourism partners to showcase both the artists and New Zealand’s diverse landscapes. “We’re excited to push the boundaries of what’s possible with live music filming, and Blackmagic cameras will be at the heart of that journey.”
