Sony announces firmware updates for the FX6, FX3 & FX30

Sony will add some new features to its compact cine cameras as 2024 progresses. The FX6 will be the first camera to get the firmware update in May this year, while the FX3 and FX30 will have to wait until September. The FX6 will also get more meaningful upgrades including 1.5x anamorphic de-squeeze, new integrated 3D LUT, and more.

FX6 ver.5.0 firmware

The FX6 will get a rather significant firmware update with Version 5.0. Coming in May 2024 it will include:

  • 1.5x de-squeeze function for anamorphic lenses.
  • Integrated high-quality 3D LUT processes. This should mirror the VENICE cinema camera to allow for more accurate color alignment and overall post-processing.
  • Monitor & Control App v2.0 features (eg. Waveform, False color).
  • Breathing Compensation Expansion: More lenses will be supported including the FE 100-400mm f/4.5-5.6 GM OSS and the FE 200-600mm f/5.6-6.3 G OSS lenses.

Sony FX3 and FX30 future update

This future update for the compact FX3 and FX30 is yet to be numbered since September isn’t quite around the corner, and other firmware fixes might get in the way. The update is not as significant as the FX6 update and will include:

  • A Shutter Angle option
  • 709tone support
  • SRT/RTMP/RTMPS support for live-streaming

The addition of a shutter angle functionality is very welcome and aligns Sony’s compact cine cameras with most of their direct competitors long offering this feature.
